On my way to Latin America

June 18, 2011

So I was supposed to be in LA early Thursday morning, shopping up a storm and eating frozen yoghurt.

Yeah. I’m still in Sydney.

Thanks to the plume of ash from the Chilean volcano currently making its way around the globe my flight was cancelled and I’ll be in LA two days late which gives me just enough time to make my flight to Guatemala.

So hopefully by the time you read this, I’ll be on my way to Honolulu to connect with my flight to mainland USA.

After that I fly to Guatemala for a one week intensive Spanish class where I intend to learn essential phrases like “are you sure I can go to the toilet there” and “please do not use hot water to wash my clothes”.

Coming up on OnMyWayRTW

I have a few more posts on India coming up (including a recipe for chai! Yum!), a series on Bhutan from my BFF and frequent travel buddy Alicia and of course plenty of dispatches from the dusty roads of Latin America.

In the meantime

I don’t know about Guatemala, but in Costa Rica they rarely use hot water to wash the clothes unless you are in Gringolandia, aka Escazu, aka where all the US citizens retired to. Here are some useful phrases: “Una cerveza por favor” “Una mรกs cerveza por favor” ๐Ÿ™‚

Great news, Erin ๐Ÿ˜€ Thanks for the phrases! I’ll add them to my current knowledge base, which consists of “Hola” and “Gracias” ๐Ÿ˜‰

2 more weeks and we’ll be en-route to Guatemala for Spanish Classes ourselves. You’ll have to let me know what you think of the school you pick out.

Ooh, that’s exciting! I’ll be in the country until the second week of July – would be cool if our paths cross. I’ve enjoyed my first day at the spanish school so far, but I’ll wait the week out before making any definitive comments!
