The second morning of my hike from Xela to Lake Atitlan, Guatemala with Quetzaltrekkers we ate breakfast at a local comedor in the village of Santa Catarina, next door to this butcher shop.
A pack of local dogs were out and about waiting for their own breakfast, hanging around just in case the butcher should decide to literally throw them a bone.
This dog reminded me of my own in Sydney – at the slightest chance of food, it refused to give up hope.
It’s beautiful staring eyes clearly got too much for the butcher because he was soon throwing scraps into the square.

Aw….so cute
I think the ubiquitous packs of wild dogs was one of the strangest things I saw while in Peru and Chile….they were always such ecclectic groups, but thankfully all pretty docile!
There are always wild dogs….everywhere! At least here they seem better looked after than the ones I came across in India, where dogs are pretty much on the same level as rats. Actually, thinking about the rat temple – they’re probably lower!
I wouldn’t be able to resist throwing scraps to that pup either! Great photo
Thanks Danielle!
This is the story of every dog’s life on the streets of Guatemala. And now becoming more and more of the people’s too. Hunger!
Yet they still have smiles on their faces.
Very true, Marina
That’s some pretty epic concentration…
