Australia, Northern Territory

An amazing day in Australia’s far north

June 30, 2012

This is another dorky blast from my past!

When we were kids, in the day before highway bypasses, we did a few looonnggg car trips every year. In order to help pass the time, my parents would play us John Williamson tapes on the car stereo.

His website calls him ‘Australia’s true blue balladeer’ and he sang at Steve Irwin’s funeral. I learned a lot more about Australia than I ever realised about the time and it wasn’t until I was an adult that I realised the girls he names in the video above are the names of towns in the Northern Territory. Whenever I hear it it reminds me of those epic landscapes and frontier-style towns that make the NT what it is.

Australia, Northern Territory

The very first trip

The Ghan at Adelaide Station

While getting ready for my upcoming trip to the Northern Territory, I’ve been looking over my photos from the first time I travelled up to Darwin. My four best friends and I spent several days on a train from Sydney and it was my first experience of long-distance rail travel (and definitely not my last).

Only just 20 years old, it was well before I started travelling properly. It was my Very First Backpacking Trip, and afterwards it would be another six months before I left Australia for the very first time.

It feels like a lifetime ago.

I think I even look like a different person…a dorky, gawky, awkward person! I was yet to find my travel style, I had no idea how to use a DSLR camera (or what a DSLR camera even was), I had to borrow my boyfriend’s backpack and I had no idea of the shape of things to come…but it would plant a seed that eventually became my trip around the world.

Since that trip, I’ve spent nearly ten years of my life obsessing over being in motion, over travelling. So am I excited to be returning to where it all started?

You betcha!

On the road again: going north

Katherine Gorge, Australia's top end

This year has been pretty quiet for me, when it comes to travel. Since getting back from my trip around the world, I’ve been sticking pretty close to home, with the exception of a brief Easter long weekend jaunt to Kuala Lumpur & Penang. This is the longest stretch of time I’ve spent in Sydney in a fair while and my feet are getting decidedly itchy.

So it’s with great excitement that I can share that, thanks to Tourism NT and Canon Australia, I’ll soon be joining my good friends Ant and Elise from Positive World Travel and heading up Darwin to spend some time exploring Australia’s top end and trying out some of Canon’s latest equipment.

This won’t be my first time in the Northern Territory – that part of the country was the scene of my very first backpacking trip (more about that next week!) – but I can’t wait to spend a bit more time in Darwin, and get out and camp in Kakadu, which I missed the first time round.
