2011 Travel Plans

April 24, 2011

Even before I arrived back in Sydney from my trip around the world, I knew I wasn’t coming back permanently. I was tired and burnt out, but I wasn’t finished traveling – not even close. I just needed a break.

I’ve had my break. Leaving for my first RTW trip in 2010

Since getting back in February, I’ve managed to pick up two different copywriting contracts and when the current one ends, I’m getting back on the road.

I’m leaving Sydney in June to spend four months in Latin America. And I can’t wait.

Having been through all this planning and anticipation before, this time it doesn’t feel as life-changing as it did last May. Rather, it just seems like a natural continuation of where I left off.

Soon, my time back home in Sydney will feel like just another stop on my round the world trip.

So where am I going?

I fly into Los Angeles in mid-June. I have a couple of days there to do some last minute trip shopping (thank you, Aussie dollar!) before I take a night flight to Guatemala.

Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama

I have a few weeks in Guatemala to learn Spanish and see the sites before I meet a friend and her boyfriend in Antigua in July.

We’ll then travel together through a few more Central American countries before we part ways in Costa Rica and I have a brief stay in Panama before my flight to Ecuador at the beginning of August.

Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina and Chile

The Amazon. The Andes. Machu Pichu. They’re all on the list. Before you ask, the Galapagos are not.

My trip ends in October in Buenos Aires, Argentina. That is, if I don’t decide to extend the ticket.

Is four months enough?

Probably not. And after the luxury of a year, four months seems like nothing. After all, I spent an entire month in Mongolia alone.

But to be honest, I’m a little bit poor.

And four months is much more than most get!

Sounds great! I am crafting a Central & South American itinerary for 2012, and I think I will only have around 4 months or so so I will be looking forward to seeing how it goes for you!

I've spent 13 months in Latin America, started in Mexico and am now in Argentina.

If you're strapped for cash I really recommend doing the whole 4 months in Central America. I did 4 months there and it is very cheap and there is so much to see.

I love South America and intend to stay here but it's very pricey. It's been quite challenging sticking to a budget of $30/day in Chile and Argentina as the prices are very similar to Canada. To do such a massive piece of land in 2 months (if you are splitting the time between the two) you would need to take a lot of flights or overnight buses which are really expensive.

Whereas in Central America I was only averaging $20/day, everything is so close and it's only $1/hr to get anywhere by bus.

Just a thought. I love Latin America but it is much larger than most people think.

Thanks for the very considered comment 🙂 You're definitely the expert on South America at the moment so I really appreciate the tips.

I suspect by the time I get to Chile and Argentina I'll really be rushing – there's so much I want to do in Peru and Bolivia especially, so I have a feeling by I might only have a couple of weeks to make my way to Buenos Aires by the end of it.

So long as I can taste some red wine, eat some steak and see some beautiful Andean vistas, I think I'll be pretty happy…maybe not completely satisfied, but happy 🙂

And great to hear Central America is so cheap…hopefully the budget will average itself out in the end.

Wow, Antigua in July, then off to Ecuador. Sounds a lot like the first leg of our upcoming trip. With any luck, I can pick your brain about Mongolia in person. Maybe even in Spanish…

I wonder what the Spanish word for “fermented mare’s milk” is?? 😀 Keep in touch, it would be cool to meet up.

Wow Megan, sounds fantastic! I’ll be kicking off my South/Central American adventure in no time too! Just my backpack and a one way ticket! I’m quite sure you’ll squeeze in heaps over the course of those four months! We’ll have to keep in touch as we’re going in opposite directions we’ll be able to pass on tips! Can’t wait!

Ahh the thrill and anticipation of the one way ticket! I have a return ticket this time (much to the delight of my mother) but who knows. Definitely keep in touch, it’s always great to find other Aussie travellers online 🙂

Thanks Claire. Looks like you’re having some great adventures in Kosovo. I have to read your volunteering posts in more detail – I keep saying I’m going to volunteer somewhere and I keep letting other plans get in the way!
