Keen to get to Asia, where my money goes further, I travelled between San Francisco and Chicago on Amtrak’s California Zephyr in an attempt to literally see as much of the USA as I could in a short space of time. I wasn’t disappointed. In three days and two nights I travelled through California, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa and Illinois, with a four-hour stop in Denver, Colorado.
The landscape was constantly changing. The first day we climbed through the Sierra Nevadas, travelling through Narnia-like scenery and past a lone, blue-eyed wolf standing in the snow watching us go by. By the following morning, we were in Utah, which might as well have been the moon with it’s barren, rocky landscape. Forest, desert, open flat lands, small towns and the outskirts of Chicago – I saw it all.
